Kokomo Academy of Martial Arts

Karate

The style of karate that we offer is Matsamura Shorin-Ryu, an Okinawan style developed by the legendary samurai Sokon “Bushi” Matsamura. James Kennedy, an Okinawan trained martial artist and the fifth recipient of the prestigious Trias International Award, brought this style to the U.S., and opened a school in Kokomo, IN. in 1965. Throughout the next 40 years, the students of Sensei Kennedy, and their students maintained the traditional instruction of the Matsamura style.

Your study of karate will begin with basic techniques: Stances, punches, blocks and kicks. The importance of correct breathing is emphasized, as well as proper warm-up technique. Control, self-discipline, and self-esteem help the students develop into well-rounded martial artists. You will find there are many aspects to achieve, for to develop strong techniques many hours of practice and true devotion and desire will be necessary. But, don’t become discouraged, for the study of karate gives not only physical strength, but also self-confidence and pride in knowing that you can accomplish the goals that you desire in your life.
